This week's blog assignment was to create a presentation to present to my boss, that would make a definitive case for a company-wide employee development plan. Five strong points explaining the benefits and three employee development initiatives are highlighted. My presentation is presented below.

  1. Rasheeda,

You made some great points regarding how an employee development plan would work for your school. I especially like the point regarding "employees will be better equipped to perform in other positions, both existing and non-existing." I recall reading that in the Noe (2010) text, now that you mentioned it. When I created my 'pitch' I was only thinking of the impact development would have in supporting existing positions. I like the idea that development will make an impact on non-existing positions as well. Great ideas, very compelling.

  2. Rasheeda,
You did a very good job on the putting together this PowerPoint recommendation for an employee development program for your school. I liked your opening quote to get the audience into the mood. Good use of graphics to call attention to your ideas. However, there was too much text on each slide. Several of the slides would be difficult to read in a large room. If you were going to give this presentation you would have to increase the number of slides and change the paragraphs to bullet points. Your right that schools seem to rely a lot on the informal interpersonal relationship between staff for development of teachers. It would be a positive investment of time to formalize that relationship. I liked your suggestion of training high-potential employees and preparing them for current and future leadership roles in the district. Another important point is that administrators and school boards don't always appreciate the fact that staff development ultimately benefits the students.
The last school district I was in had a 360 degree performance assessment program for teachers and administrators. Input was obtained via survey from students, parents, other teachers and administrators every 3 years. It was very informative both for the teacher or administrator and their supervisor. Mentor and coaching positions work if they are full time.
You did a very good job on this employee development plan for your school, it is very affordable and doable.
